Historical Note

The Indiana Methodist Historical Society began as the South Indiana Conference United Methodist Historical Society in 1995. The Society was formed by William Bartelt (its first president), Jack Haskins, Lee Bilderback, Wesley Wilson and John Baughman for the following purposes: 1. Working with the Annual Conference Commission on Archives and History in the collection and preservation of materials related to the history of The United Methodist Church and its antecedents. 2. Promoting research, writing, and publication in the field. 3. Locating and encouraging the preservation of appropriate sites of historical interest within the Conference. 4. Developing interest in United Methodist history and skills for pursuing it among local church historians and others. 5. Developing and promoting observances of historical anniversaries and other events of interest. 6. Engaging in such other activities as shall be deemed proper. Its first executive committee meeting was July 15, 1995. Its first annual program was April 27, 1996. The Society reorganized to include northern Indiana in 2005 and changed its name to reflect its larger scope. In 2023, the Society changed its name to Indiana Methodist Historical Society to include Indiana United Methodists as well as those affiliated with the Global Methodist Church.
