Historical Sketch
Asbury United Methodist Church was officially organized in 1962 with 107 charter members. A cornfield at the corner of 42nd Street and Post Road became the church grounds. By the generous assistance of Forest Manor Methodist Church, meetings were held in the House Chapel located on the west side of the parking lot. The first service was held June 24, 1962 with Rev. E. Carver McGriff conducting services. The Church is named for Francis Asbury, first Methodist bishop in the United States. The present sanctuary was built in 1964 and the educational wing was added in 1966. In January 2000 Asbury UMC merged with Cumberland UMC at 219 N. Muessing St., Indianapolis.
From its inception until its merger with Cumberland UMC, seven ministers served Asbury United Methodist Church: Rev. E. Carver McGriff (June 1962 - June 1967), Rev. Frank R. Chrust(June 1967 - June 1968), Rev. Charles Gipson (June 1968 - February 1975), Rev. Allan Wilson (February 1975 - June 1979), Rev. Joseph N. Easley (June 1979 - June 1988), Rev. Glen A. Clarkson (June 1988 - June 1994), Rev. Douglas Simpson (June 1994 - January 2000).
