Historical Sketch
In 1852 a small group of German people with a preacher named Riele organized a congregation which first met in a schoolhouse. After a year they formed the German Congregational Church, which in 1855 was formally adopted as a mission by the Indiana Conference of the Evangelical Association. This church was first known as Immanuel, later as Salem and then as the First Evangelical Church. The present church building was erected in 1882.
In 1946 the First Evangelical Church merged with the United Brethren and in 1968 with the Methodists to form the New York Street United Methodist Church. In 1979 the church became Lockerbie Square UMC. In 2006 it merged with Central Avenue UMC and became known as Lockerbie Central UMC. It was a member of the South Indiana Conference and was the mother church of three other Indianapolis churches: Second Church, Beville Avenue, and Broadway. The church closed in 2013.
