Collection Statement

The Edwin L. Minar Jr. collection is largely comprised of correspondence, 1939-79. Correspondence has been arranged chronologically. Also included in the collection is a bibliography of Minar’s published writings, clippings, faculty professional records, Ford Fellowship records, photographs, papers and other items related to his life and career. Three card file boxes of Minar’s research notes have also been added to the collection.

Biographical Sketch

Edwin L. Minar Jr. Was born April 17, 1915 in Portland, Oregon. He graduated from Reed College and received his Ph.D. in classics from the University of Wisconsin in 1940. He held positions at Dakota Wesleyan and Connecticut College before joining the DePauw faculty in 1951. He published several articles on Greek philosophy, and presented a number of scholarly papers. His doctoral thesis on early Pythagorean politics, a standard work on the subject, was published as a book in 1942. He later translated and published a major work on Pythagoras. Minar received DePauw’s first faculty fellowship from the Ford Foundation’s Fund for Advancement of Education in 1954. He served as president of the Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy and was one of a limited number of scholars invited to Spain in 1974 to deliver a paper at an international conference on early Greek philosophy. In 1981, DePauw honored him by establishing the Minar Scholarship Award for a faculty member who has accumulated an exceptional record of teaching and scholarship. Minar himself was the first recipient. He retired in 1980 and passed away on September 4, 1985 at the age of 70.
