Biographical Note
Milton Mahin was born in Green County, Ohio October 22, 1824, the son of John and Hester Mahin. He came from sturdy Methodist ancestry. His grandfather Mahin was a local preacher and received deacon's orders at the hands of Bishop Asbury. When he was fourteen, he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and soon afterwards received a call to the ministry, preaching his first sermon in the summer of 1840. In 1841, he became licensed to preach and soon was admitted into the traveling connection of the North Indiana Conference, being assigned as junior preacher on the Paoli Circuit. His early appointments were Paoli, Wilmington, Patriot, Versailles, and Perrysville. On most of these early circuits it was necessary to preach every day, and from two to three times on Sunday.
He married Eliza Dorsey on October 31, 1843, and they were married 63 years. Dr. Mahin, who retired from active work in 1895, received the Doctor of Divinity degree from DePauw University and was widely respected as a master preacher, scholar, defender of the faith, and noble Christian man of God. The father of five children, he died October 7, 1916, and was buried in New Castle, Indiana.
