Historical Sketch

In 1869 leading women in the Methodist Episcopal Church began to consider organizing to "extend the Gospel to women by women". In 1870 this movement springing up spontaneously among women of the Church was formally organized as the "Women's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church". As it grew, branches were established; all were conducted by women who volunteered their services because of missionary concerns. The "branches" were centers for the recruitment of young women for overseas careers, for education in surrounding churches, and for securing funds for missionary support.
