Historical Sketch
The Indiana Eta chapter of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity was founded at Indiana Asbury University on February 25, 1868 with the help of Greencastle lawyer, J.S. Nutt, a member of the Indiana Alpha chapter. There were four charter members at this time, including J.R. Miller '68, Tolbert Bartl '69, C.O. Perry '69, and D.B. Floyd '72. The fraternity's numbers had increased to ten by commencement of that year, and the brothers held their meetings in Nutt's law offices.
The chapter had become inactive by 1879, when both charter Eta chapter members in conjunction with Apha chapter members pushed for revitalization. On May 10, 1880 twelve new members were initiated, followed later that month by six additional new members. After revitalization, meetings were held in the offices of charter member Miller, and his partner and new initiate, T.T. Moore for the remainder of the semester.
The following year, the chapter held meetings in the third story of Allen's business block in downtown Greencastle. In October, ten delegates were sent to the National Convention in Indianapolis, where the chapter's name was changed from Indiana Eta to Indiana Zeta.
By 1901, Indiana Zeta had moved out of the business block and into a house on East Seminary St., one house east of the Alpha Tau Omega house. At one time the house had belonged to the Jocelyn family, and later, in 1918, would be the home of the Alpha Phi Sorority.
Sometime between 1904 and 1908, Indiana Zeta moved again, to the old Dunbar house on Franklin Street. The house was razed in 1963, and the Indiana Zeta chapter of Phi Delta Theta currently resides on Anderson Street.
