Collection Statement

Records of the Philosphy and Religion Department include clippings, photographs of faculty, brochures and fliers, readings on religious instruction at the university, correspondence, and meeting minutes, 1946-ca.1995. The collection is arranged alphabetically; the correspondence and minutes are arranged chronologically. Additional teaching materials of Roger Gustavsson were added to the collection at a later date. Also included is information relating to the division of the Philosophy and Religion Department into the Philosophy Department and the Religious Studies Department, 1992-1993.

Historical Sketch

Philosophy and Religion have been a part of DePauw's (and Indiana Asbury University's) curriculum since the beginning. The course of study listed for seniors in 1839 included Natural and Experimental Philosophy, Rhetoric, Mental Philosophy, Paley's Theology, Moral Science and Evidences of Christianity, half of the required classes. Throughout its history the university has also had a Bible department and a School of Theology (1886-1900). The Philosophy and Religion Department was formed from the Philosophy Department and the Religious Education Department in 1946. In 1996 these separated to form the Philosophy Department and the Religious Studies Department.
