Biographical Note
Aimaro Satō was born on April 22, 1857 in Hirosaki, Aomori Ken, Japan. He graduated from DePauw in 1881 and received an A.B. and A.M. in 1884. In 1881 he was a clerk in the Foreign Office; chief of the Telegraph Bureau, with rank of secretary of legation in 1884. On May 8, 1876, he married Yukiko Tsushima in Japan. They had one child, Naotake Satō. From 1888-1891, Satō was the secretary of legation and charge d' affaires in Washington, D.C. In 1891, he was secretary of legation in London. Beginning in 1893, Satō was the chief of Bureau of Protocole of Telegraph and Translation, Foreign Office, in Tokyo. He was the first secretary of legation in Paris during 1896 and the same in Berlin during 1899. In 1900, he was the minister resident and consul-general in Mexico; president of the Intelligence Commission, Foreign Office, 1904; accompanied his Imperial Highness, the Prince Fushimi, to the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, as grand master; suite of peace plenipotentiaries at Portsmouth, and suite of special plenipotentiary at Peking, 1905; envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to the Court of Holland, 1906; second delegate, plenipotentiary to the second peace conference, The Hague, 1907. From 1916-1918, Satō served as the Japanese Ambassador the the United States, replacing his brother-in-law, Chinda Sutemi, class of 1881. He retired from the Ministry of Freign Affairs and served the Prince Fushimi as privy councillor. He passed away on January 12, 1934.
