Biographical Sketch
Mr. Simpkins played football for DePauw as a freshman and sophomore, lettering both years. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi and is mentioned in Gregory Bond's book, Jim Crow at Play: Race, Manliness, and the Color Line in American Sports, 1876-1916, Thesis (Ph.D.) University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2008, pg. 485. From an obituary: "Harry Edward Simpkins a long-time resident of Boswell, Indiana, died March 4 in the St. Elizabeth hospital in Lafayette where he had been ill six weeks with a heart ailment. He was the owner of the Simpkins funeral home in Boswell and president of the Farmers' and Merchants' bank. He also held an interest in the Boswell Lumber company and the Boswell cheese factory. He is survived by his widow and by two daughters."
