Biographical Sketch
A Rector Scholar, Phi Beta Kappa, and a 1927 graduate of DePauw University, G. Herbert Smith received an M.A. from the University of Illinois in 1928 and an Ed.D. from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1938. He became dean of freshmen at DePauw in 1932, and in 1939 he was made dean of administration. He also served as director of public relations and as director of the Rector Scholarship Foundation. He was named president of Willamette University in 1942 and served that university until he retired 1970. G. Herbert Smith died on September 5, 11980, in Laguna Hills, California.
