Biographical Sketch
Nationally recognized physicist Dr. Orrin H. Smith, an emeritus professor at DePauw University, died September 12 in Everett, Washington. A native of Iowa, Dr. Smith joined the DePauw faculty in 1925 and served as head of the physics department until his retirement in 1952. Twice national honors were bestowed on Smith for his contribution to science education. In 1950 he received the Oersted Medal from the American Association of Physics Teachers. The honor goes to the teaching physicist in America who has made the most notable contribution in that discipline. In 1959 Dr. Smith received the Golden Key Award in Atlantic City from the American Association of School Administrators. The Association annually honors two persons-the citizen who has contributed significantly to the national welfare and a teacher named by the citizen as the person who influenced his life most decisively.
