Scope and Contents

This collection includes photographs of Joseph Eijiro Takasugi as well as two articles about his life. The first article is from a Phi Delt publication titled, The Scrolls, dated from October 1934. The article "Phi Delt Across the Seas" was written by John Millett, class of 1933. The second article is from The DePauw Alumnus magazine, dated from May-June 1937. It details specifics about Dr. Takasugi's honorary degree and the Japanese cloisonne vase and Hokkaido Imperial University scroll gifted to the university as part of its centennial celebration in 1937.

Biographical Note

Joseph Eijiro Takasugi was born on August 5, 1867 in Hirosaki, Japan. He graduated from DePauw as part of the class of 1891. Eijiro was affiliated with the Phi Delt fraternity. He received an A.B. degree from Mount Union College in 1892 and a Ph.D. from Boston University in 1893. From 1893-1894, he was an English and Philosophy instructor at Chinzei, Gakuin, Nagasaki, Japan. In 1894-1896, he was an instructor at Too-Gijiku, Hirosaki, Japan. From 1896-1899, a professor of Philosophy and pastor of College Church, Tokyo, Anglo-Japanese College, Tokyo. In 1899-1903, professor of English Literature at the Imperial College of Agriculture, Sapporo, Japan. He traveled extensively in Europe and the United States from 1903-1906. In 1907, he was professor of English at Tohoku Imperial University, Sapporo, Japan.

In 1937, Dr. Takasugi was awarded an honorary degree of letters as part of DePauw's centennial celebration. He was the furthest traveling alumnus to the occasion. The Japanese government sent its consul from Chicago to the celebration and gifted a cloisonne vase and scroll in honor of the longstanding relationship between DePauw and Japan.
