Historical Sketch
The Mount Carmel Church Society was organized about 1856 at the hewed log school house that stood about sixty rods north of the present site of the church. In nice weather, services were held in a grove near the school house and some times in a barn on the Samuel Ervin farm. The first Sunday School was held at the home on the old Leonard Cline farm south and west of the church.
The church building was erected during the summer of 1861 and 1862, and was dedicated in 1865. The men who built the church boarded at Samuel Ervins'. Among them were Emory Ervin of Hartford City, the Quakenbushes, Bowmans, Brandts, Ervins, and others of the church and neighborhood. The belfry was built by J.O. Underhill and others about 1897.
Due to a windstorm which damaged the church, it was remodeled then dedicated in 1923.
The church closed September 12, 2024.
