Biographical Sketch
J. Milton Yinger graduated from DePauw University with an A.B. in 1937, received an M.A. from Louisiana State University and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He is an esteemed American sociologist, specializing in sociology and religion. Yinger began his career in 1941 at Ohio Wesleyan University and was named Professor of Sociology at Oberlin College in 1946. He was the chairman of the Oberlin College Sociology Department from 1969-1975. He was a visiting professor at the University of Michigan in 1958, University of Hawaii in 1961, visiting fellow at Cambridge University in 1976, Guggenheim Fellow from 1968-1969, American Sociological Association President from 1976-1977 and author of numerous books, including Religion in the Struggle for Power, Religion, Society, and the Individual, and The Scientific Study of Religion. In 1982, Yinger was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters from DePauw University.
