Biographical Sketch

Information later contained in student handbooks was originally a part of the university bulletins and catalogs. Late in the 19th century, handbooks appeared as separate publications of the university or the YMCA and YWCA. Titles varied to include information for the whole campus in the earliest editions. Later, student information was separated from that intended for faculty and other university employees. The reader will find information about requirements for study, who the faculty are and even advice. The earliest publication, 1882-83, has a section with the heading, “What to do on Arriving at Greencastle.” An 1898-99 edition includes the university calendar, clubs and other extra-curricular activities, areas of interest such as Eel River Falls, a church directory and study advice. Much the same sort of information persisted throughout the years in the publication and can still be found in the on-line version today.
