Biographical Sketch

William Warren Sweet was born on February 15, 1881 in Baldwin, Kansas. He was the son of Rev. William H. and Rose (Williams) Sweet. Sweet was educated at Ohio Wesleyan University (A.B. 1902), Drew Theological Seminary (B.D. 1906), Crozer Theological Seminary (Th.M. 1907), University of Pennsylvania (A.M. 1909, Ph.D. 1912). He also received an honorary Litt. D. from Ohio Wesleyan in 1936 and two honorary D.D.'s, one from Cornell College in 1922, the other from DePauw University in 1956. Highlights of his teaching career include visiting professorships at Harvard, Northwestern, Syracuse, Washington, and Drew universities. He was also a delegate to the Montivideo, Uruguay Congress on Christian Work in 1925. A leading authority on the history of Christianity, Sweet was the author of twenty-seven books, and at the time of his death was working to complete a four-volume work, The history of Religion in America. William Sweet died on January 3, 1959 in Dallas, Texas.
