Also included in the back of the document case is The German Ballad: History, Four Great Writers, Characteristics Thesis offered by Martha Tarbell, Candidate for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Brown University, March 31, 1897 and photographs.

Biographical Sketch

Martha Tarbell was born August 23, 1862, in Ontario Canada. She was educated at DePauw University (A.B. 1884, A.M. 1887) and Brown University (A.M. 1894, Ph.D. 1897). In 1933 DePauw awarded her an honorary Litt. D. Tarbell was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, Phi Beta Kappa, AAUW, Pi Gamma Mu, and DAR She was also the author of nine books. Martha died on October 28, 1948, in East Orange, New Jersey.
