Historical Sketch
Dean of Women, 1904 - 1948
The position of Dean of Women was created in 1904 and for many years was regarding as a responsibility in addition to teaching duties. Dean Elizabeth Smith was the first dean to be listed in the catalog whose only responsibilities were the duties of the deans office. The position increased in duties and responsibility with the coming of Dean Alvord. In 1948 the Offices of the Dean of Women and Men were merged to create the Office of the Dean of Students.
