Collection Statement

The personal movie and slide collection of Dr. Laurel H. Turk included 19-200 foot reels and 3-50 foot reels. They were transferred to videotape. Tape #2 footage includes the Turk family, other subjects included are the Huttle Club, founded in 1931 by some of the younger faculty members. Some of the Huttle Club members were: Stephen M. Corley, Glen Giddings, William Neiswanger, Frank Vreeland, Thomas Pedlow, Coen Pierson, Harold Robbins, Laurel Turk, George Bird, A.W. Crandall, W. Hargrave, Lloyd Messersmith, Harold Robbins, Herold Ross, Harry Voltmer, R. Williams, Harrison, Kent, Jervis Fulmer, Thomas, Fay, Willard Umbreit, Zink, Stout, Winsey, Riebsome, Childers, Ritchie, Reynolds and Hal Brooks and many of them appear in the film. Other items of interest are the inauguration of President Wildman, candid shots of professors and families, the 1936 Christmas parade in downtown Greencastle and snow scenes on the campus in the 1930's. The remainder of tape #2 and tape #1 appears to be footage taken on travels to other countries. The countries and years visited were listed as follows: 1935 - France, Germany, Spain; 1944, 1945 - Mexico; 1948,1952 - South America; 1956 - P.R., Dominican Republic; 1963 - Spain

Biographical Sketch

Dr. Laurel H. Turk was a professor of Romance Languages at DePauw University. He began as an instructor in 1928 and was an emeritus in 1968. Over these forty years he knew many DePauw personalities, saw many changes in the university and traveled widely to foreign countries.
