Historical Sketch
DePauw University organized a radio broadcasting activity in 1941 under the direction of a Radio Advisory Council and a Studio Staff. In the fall of 1941, through the generosity of Eugene Pulliam, Publisher of the Indianapolis Star and owner of Indianapolis Station WIRE, the school was able to establish a radio studio in Harrison Hall which was operated as an auxiliary of WIRE. In 1949, WGRE 91.5 FM, owned by DePauw University, began as the first educational radio station in Indiana, operating with just 10 watts of power. Today, the award-winning WGRE is completely student-directed and operated, broadcasting 24 hours a day while the University is in session. WGRE's move into the Center for Contemporary Media allowed access to state-of-the-art facilities in areas such as production and news. WGRE provides hands-on experience to over 150 DePauw students, while providing news, sports, and entertainment to the DePauw and Greencastle communities.
