Biographical Sketch
Hulda C. Johnson was born on March 25, 1890, in Lafayette, Indiana, to Swedish immigrants Axel and Emma Johnson.
She graduated from Lafayette High School in 1909 and began her college education at DePauw University in 1910. During her time at DePauw, Johnson excelled in her studies of Latin, sociology, and literature, eventually becoming a member of both the Latin Club and the Toynbee Society, a sociology club. She was also a frequent attendee of the Locust Street Methodist Episcopal Church as well as a very involved member of the Young Women’s Christian Association.
Johnson graduated from DePauw University in 1914. After graduation, she moved back to her hometown of Lafayette, Indiana, where she taught Latin, English, and literature until retirement.
During her adult life in Lafayette, Johnson continued to be an active member of the United Methodist Church. In 1970, after retiring from teaching, she moved into Warren Methodist Memorial Home, where she spent the remainder of her life.
On August 31, 1978, Hulda C. Johnson died at the age of eighty-eight after a stroke. Friends described Johnson as cheerful, patient, a good friend, and a kind person. Her legacy lives on in the lives of the students she taught throughout her long career.
