Historical Sketch

Barbour Avenue Church, Terre Haute, Indiana, was organized in 1896. The first building erected in 1896 was called Calvary Mission. The congregation later proceeded to erect a new building at a cost of $500, calling it "Second Church." An extension was built in 1903 at a cost of $15,000 and in 1907 another addition costing $2,700. The construction of the present building was begun in 1914, by building a basement, costing $5,000. The upper part was built in 1918 at $40,000. A parsonage was dedicated in December 1921 costing $5,000. In 1939 major remodeling was done at $11,000. The church sustained a loss of about $5,000 in 1941 due to a fire. Improvements added included hearing aids in the auditorium, additional chimes, new neon signs for the church, and stokers for both church and parsonage. In 1952 new pews were added, new carpet and chancel furniture at $10,000. In April 1964 the Fort Harrison Church merged with Barbour Avenue. The membership in 1968 was reported at 454. The church disaffiliated from United Methodist Church, closing on July 1, 2022.
