William E. McCarty papers
Collection Statement
The collection consists primarily of handwritten sermons, most of which are undated. There are also fragments of sermon texts that have become separated over time. It may be possible to match some of these scattered pages to complete additonal sermons. A few additional manuscript notes and printed items are also included as well as a rubber stamp with the name of his son, William A. McCarty. Many dated sermons have more than one date when they were preached. In those cases, the earliest date is used for filing purposes. This explains the late date for the collection as a whole - it was the last date that one of the sermons was preached (1919). Besides the sermons, there are a few Bible studies over particular parts of scripture, an essay on David and Goliath and a speech given to the Masons. The Methodists were opposed to secret societies including the Masons in the early part of the nineteenth century, but moderated their stand later as evidenced by this speech.

Items removed from the collection
One item removed for cataloging: Bible Studies for the Juniors of the Epworth League, Rev. B.T. Vincent, New York: Eaton and Mains, 1878, 1894. A membership transfer was added to church history vertical file for Pleasant Hill Evangelical United Brethren Church (Daviess County). A letter from C. W. Miller to the official board of the Main Street Methodist Episcopal Church, Peru, Ind., 1871, transferred to that church's vertical file. Page from a record book of the joint board of the trustees of the English and German M.E. churches, Wawaka, Ind., 1874, was added to that church's vertical file.
Condition
Many of the sermon pages are fastened together with brass brads or steel straight pins. The pins were removed because of rust, but the brads have been left in. They may be removed for research use and then replaced with plastic paper clips.
