Historical Note
The Anthropology Museum was created in the early 1960s by Professor Edward M. Dolan. The museum was located in the basement of Asbury and considered the successor to the former Social Museum in East College. After three years, the decision was made to change the department’s name to Sociology and Anthropology and offer majors in both subjects. In the early 1980s, the museum was curated by Mary La Lone, a part-time professor of anthropology and museum studies. She arranged for special exhibits of more than 50 pieces of West African art objects donated by DePauw alumni. She was later named the university curator in 1985.
