Historical Note

Beneath the Boulder was an underground student newspaper. The publication focused on local issues, the Vietnam War, social unrest, education, and the relationship between faculty, staff and students. Issues did not include names of the writers or editors, although creators were unvieled in a 1969 Mirage yearbook using the name Beta Tau Beta, the same initials as Beneath the Boulder.

Edward N. Stoner (class of 1969) and Larry Lankton (class of 1969) led the effort to create Beneath the Boulder. Editors also included John Gruhl (class of 1969) and Paul D. Carpenter (class of 1969). In the third issue, editors suggested the goal of the newspaper was satire, like its predecessors, The Yellow Crab and the Hoot.

Beneath the Boulder attempted to revive in 1970 and 1973.
