Collection Statement
The majority of this collection is comprised of original letters from home, written by the parents and siblings of Charles A. Harkness to him while a student at DePauw University. Also included is a transcription of these letters, his high school valedictorian speech and various obituary clippings of family members.

Historical Sketch
Charles Adam Harkness entered DePauw University in September of 1897 and later became a pharmacist. He married Uda Louisa Kohl in 1902. Hugo Kohl’s Apothocary had become the Harkness Pharmacy, and he was actively involved as a pharmacist until about 1961. The couple’s first-born child, Charles A. Harkness, Jr., was born June 28, 1903. Following Charles were Dorothy, Alfred, Richard, Beth and Marjorie. The elder Charles A. Harkness died in Hays, Kansas, in 1963.
His son, Charles, Jr., was also a pharmacist, graduating from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy in 1923, and active as a pharmacist in Hays, Kansas until 1970. A great-grandson, Charles Eric Harkness, continued the tradition, graduating from Kansas University School of Pharmacy in 1981.
