Collection Statement

From the Collection:

The collection consists primarily of handwritten sermons, most of which are undated. There are also fragments of sermon texts that have become separated over time. It may be possible to match some of these scattered pages to complete additonal sermons. A few additional manuscript notes and printed items are also included as well as a rubber stamp with the name of his son, William A. McCarty. Many dated sermons have more than one date when they were preached. In those cases, the earliest date is used for filing purposes. This explains the late date for the collection as a whole - it was the last date that one of the sermons was preached (1919). Besides the sermons, there are a few Bible studies over particular parts of scripture, an essay on David and Goliath and a speech given to the Masons. The Methodists were opposed to secret societies including the Masons in the early part of the nineteenth century, but moderated their stand later as evidenced by this speech.
